What is Solitaire?

Historically, the term solitaire refers to card games designed for one player. The classic version, often called Klondike Solitaire, uses a standard 52-card deck.

The objective is to move all cards to four foundation piles in ascending order from Ace to King, separated by suit.

Solitaire card game rules

Set up

There are four main types of piles: the Tableau, Stock, Talon and Foundations.

The Tableau: The Tableau consists of seven piles. The first pile contains one card, the second contains two cards, and so on until the seventh pile contains seven cards. Only the top card of each pile is face up.

The Stock: The remaining cards after the Tableau is dealt form the Stock.

The Talon: Cards are drawn from the Stock to form the Talon. Only the available top card can be played.

The Foundations: Four foundation piles are built by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

How to play Solitaire

Within the Tableau, face-up cards are moved in descending order and alternating colors. A player can move an individual card or an eligible sequence of cards between Tableau piles.

An empty Tableau space can normally be filled with a King. Cards from the Talon or Tableau can be moved to the Foundations when they continue the correct suit sequence.

The game is won when every card has been transferred to the four Foundations in ascending suit order.

Solitaire variations

Spider Solitaire, FreeCell, Forty Thieves and other games are popular variations of classic Solitaire.

Spider Solitaire

Spider is a more difficult variation that uses two decks and multiple Tableau piles. The objective is to build complete sequences from King down to Ace and remove them from play.

FreeCell

FreeCell uses a standard 52-card deck dealt face up into eight Tableau piles. Four temporary storage cells provide additional strategic choices.

Forty Thieves

Forty Thieves Solitaire layout

Forty Thieves uses two decks and ten Tableau piles. Cards are arranged in descending sequences of the same suit, making this variation more challenging than classic Solitaire.
